27.05.06 - Magna consult on proposed homes

Magna’s plans for new homes in Sherborne were put on display last week to enable local residents to take a look and make comments on the housing association’s proposals.

The new housing scheme involves the proposed demolition of garages on the site next to Sherborne County Primary School in McCreery Road, Sherborne. If successful, it would provide 11 new homes for local people, including four, one bed flats and four, three bed houses to rent and also three, two bed houses to buy through a shared ownership scheme. Each property would have two parking bays with additional spaces on site for visitors.

The garage site at McCreery Road had been highlighted because few garages on this site were used and there had been problems here with them being misused.

The housing association invited local residents, town councillors, representatives from Sherborne County Primary School and Magna tenant representatives to take a look at the initial plans prior to making a planning application.

Drawings of the proposed development were made available and members of Magna’s development team were on hand to answer any questions that were raised.

Area project manager for Magna, Danny Morris, said, “We had a good turn out on the day with plenty of interest from local people. It was extremely helpful to be on hand to answer any questions and discuss any concerns that people have, during the very early stages of the development. The comments made on the proposals will be considered and incorporated into the design where possible.”

Marjorie Snowden, councillor for Sherborne Town Council and also for West Dorset District Council, attended the day and commented, “I think this consultation exercise went very well. All those who I spoke to at the event, seemed to find it extremely useful. Personally, I think the proposals for the development look good but I shall look forward to seeing the confirmed plans when an application is made. In particular, I’m glad to see that there will be some shared ownership homes available, we could do with seeing more of these in Sherborne.”

The next step for the development will be for Magna to apply for detailed planning permission from West Dorset District Council. Magna is aiming for this application to be made before the end of June 2006.
