20.06.06 - Magna resident uses poetic licence!

One of Magna Housing Association’s residents has been using their artistic talent to put pen to paper recently with a collection of their own poems.

Sandra Shutler lives on one of Magna’s sheltered housing schemes in Charminster near Dorchester and has been writing poems for some years. She has recently had two published for the enjoyment of all Magna residents in their quarterly magazine, Opendoor.

Head of communication for Magna, Catriona Fountain, says, “We are always delighted to receive pieces of writing for our residents’ magazine. Sandra’s poetry is a pleasure to read and a lot of people can relate to many of her poems.”

Sandra uses her own life experiences or what is going on in the world at the time to inspire her work. She recently wrote a piece about ‘Ladies Day’ at Royal Ascot. The popular event from the horse-racing world is taking place this week with Ladies Day on Thursday (22nd June).

Ladies Day is the third day of Royal Ascot which always features the Gold Cup race. Historically, the day of the Gold Cup attracted the largest crowds which in turn meant more ladies, hence the name.

Sandra writes,

‘The prettiest girls hide in the crowd,
The rest, mostly obvious and loud
Parade themselves for the camera to see,
Backwards and forwards, look at me!
Pushed in here, and lifted there,
Too much make up, suicide blonde hair.
Shoes too small that cripple the feet,
Heels too high, knees too weak.
Chatting away on their mobile phone,
Boasting to friends, calling home.
What a shame they are so course,
Not one as good looking as an Ascot horse.’
