26.06.06 - Magna helps residents get active

Residents from Magna Housing Association’s sheltered housing schemes have been getting the opportunity to improve the activities made available to them.

Magna’s older residents have been asked what activities they would like to see on offer on the schemes where they live. This consultation process has taken place following a full review of Magna’s sheltered housing service.

Sheltered housing manager, Carey Chant, says, “This consultation process comes as part of the work encouraged by Supporting People who encourages organisations like Magna to be more proactive and offer more activities to our residents.”

Carey adds, “This also coincides with the work of the Partnership for Older People Project (POPP), which, among other ideals, is trying to increase the number of social activities available for older people in the community to bring people together.”

Staff from Magna have visited more than 20 elderly person schemes over the last month to discuss with the residents what activities they would like to see on offer. Some of the suggestions from residents have included, lunch clubs, guest speakers, art and craft events, ‘fish and chip Fridays’, as well as activities relating to healthy living and also gentle exercise.

Also from the discussions with residents it is hoped that some might be encouraged to help out and organise more events, along with Magna’s sheltered housing officers.

In response to this Magna is organising a half day training session for residents and staff on how to provide ‘Flexercise’ classes. Flexercise is a popular method of exercise for older people that helps to increase flexibility, strength and endurance. It is just one of the activities that Magna hope to encourage more of its residents to become involved in.
