06.07.06 - Magna staff keep their cool!

While much of the south of England sweltered in the heat earlier this week, sheltered housing officers from Magna Housing Association were busy ensuring its residents were coping with the weather.

‘We were issued a warning from the Met office, via the Dorset and Somerset Health Community, at the beginning of this week,’ says Magna’s sheltered housing manager, Carey Chant. ‘We were advised that there was a 90% risk of heat wave conditions in this area until later in the week. With more than 1400 sheltered housing homes across West Dorset, we have a lot of older residents who can be more susceptible to the heat.’

To help its residents combat the heat, officers reacted quickly by providing residents with a copy of the NHS leaflet, ‘A guide to looking after yourself and others during hot weather’. Sheltered housing officers were able to talk through the advice given in the leaflet and help ensure residents know how best to deal with the heat.

Carey adds, ‘The main points made by the NHS are to keep out of the heat, try to stay cool by closing curtains or taking cooler showers and importantly to drink water regularly.’

Magna Careline operates a 24 hour emergency call service, staff on duty have also been made aware of the problems caused by excessive heat and been helping many of their customers with advice.

Copies of the NHS leaflet can be obtained by calling 08701 555 455.
