28.08.07 - Community pulls together

Sunshine, sausages and smiles in the Holbaek neighbourhood. Magna Housing Association held a community day in partnership with their residents in and around Holbaek Close, Dorchester. Dorset Community Action and the Dorset County Police where also present. After improvements in the physical surroundings of the area fences and windows, Magna took this opportunity to liaise with residents about their community.

During the morning the Community Police Officers took a walk with Housing Officer Victoria Letten. Meeting the residents who were out and about and having a chat about the current situation in the area as well as brain mapping what could be done for the future.

“It’s wonderful to hear from the young people in the area,” commented Victoria, “Often they are the ones who miss out as they don’t have their voice heard.” During the afternoon, people were asked to write a ‘wish list’ of things to be improved in the community. There were also cameras to take pictures of good and bad things around the estate.

Painting of faces and bouncing in a castle entertained the smaller children, along with a ‘hook a frog’ prize-winning game. Burgers and sausages kept the adults quiet with a BBQ and accompanying sunshine allowing residents to sit, relax and enjoy the day. The neighbourhood spirit is alive and well in this corner of Dorchester!
