28.09.06 - Magna donation to Life Education Dorset

Les Phillips OBE, Vice Chairman of Magna Housing Association will be presenting £4,500 to the health promoting Children’s charity, Life Education Dorset when they visit Damers First School on Wednesday 27th September 2006 at 1pm.

The donation will be made by Leslie Phillips on behalf of Magna tenant representatives who administer a community initiative fund to assist with various community projects

Les will then be joining year 2 pupils in a program delivered by Life Education Dorset. During the session children will learn about different ways to look after their bodies, some of which involve personal choice. They will then explore a situation involving bullying and consequences that arise. The program is delivered by a specially trained educator in a high tech mobile classroom.

Les said,’ I am thrilled that Magna is giving a cheque to help the wonderful work of Life Education with young people in our area. I am also delighted that I am able to spend an hour with year two at Damers School and learn more about Life Education Dorset’.

Life Education Dorset works with schools to help children between the ages of 3 and 11 make healthy choices. Through a progressive series of fun, memorable and age appropriate programmes children develop an understanding of how the body works, the effects and risks associated with the use of drugs including alcohol and tobacco. Through role-play they also learn life skills such as how to cope with bullying and peer pressure.

Community Fundraiser for Life Education Dorset, Sara Shearman said, ‘ Children are facing ever-increasing pressures and temptations to damage their health and futures. In Dorset we have four mobile classrooms and we visit over 40,000 children every year. We are extremely grateful to Magna Housing Association and the community initiative fund for this very generous donation.

Magna has three Tenant Panels made up of Magna residents who volunteer their time to represent others on housing related issues and help follow tenants where they can. Each panel receives a fund of £50,000 to administer and allocate projects that they feel benefit Magna residents or their children in the community.
