Mayor of Bridport with Mrs Underwood at her 100th birthday party

15.06.07 - Magna resident celebrates 100th birthday

Mrs Underwood of Hibernia Close in Bridport celebrated her 100th Birthday on the 14th June. A party and buffet was organised by her good neighbours Tom and Vera Brown at Hibernia where family and friends gathered to celebrate this wonderful day. The Mayor of Bridport, Geoffrey Ackerman, presented Mrs Underwood with a bouquet of flowers and read out messages from HRH the Queen and Sir Cliff Richard.

Mrs Underwood was born in Cheltenham in Gloucestershire and left there to go and work in London as a housemaid for the Earl and Countess Rothe but, being a west country girl, returned to live in Winchcombe, working as a ‘land girl’ during World War II. She has 2 daughters, 2 grandsons and 6 great grand children. Another amazing fact is she also has a sister who is 103 years old and another sister of 94.

Mrs Underwood has lived in Magna Housing Associations sheltered scheme since 1982 and Carey Chant the Support Services Manager of Magna presented her with a bouquet of flowers and a £50 cheque for the Dorset Air Ambulance for whom she wished donations to be sent.
