05.03.07 - Magna advice on affordable housing

Sadly many today find buying their own home in this area is just too expensive. However, Charter (SW) Ltd are hoping that they may be able to help.

On Thursday 8th March, Charter (SW) is hosting an affordable housing information day. This will be held at the Mulberry Gallery in Weymouth Library and will run from 10.30am until 4.00pm.

Charter (SW) was established in 2006 to deliver new homes within the Magna Housing Group. It provides development services to Magna’s housing associations to enable the building of open market housing, housing for affordable home ownership and affordable homes for rent.

A number of agencies are supporting the information day and will be on hand, along with staff from Charter, to provide advice and information on affordable home ownership. These agencies include, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, MyPlace and Imperial Independent Financial Advisors.

Information will also be available on the day relating to Charter’s current shared ownership housing scheme of six flats in Weymouth.

Using Charter’s shared ownership development in Weymouth and the Information Day, it is hoped to raise awareness of the different forms of affordable housing that are available and to give some a chance to own a home of their own. If anyone is interested in Charter’s current development or would simply like more information on affordable homes, they are welcome to drop in on the day.

One of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s corporate priorities is to meet the housing needs of the Borough. Its key objective is to deliver more affordable housing. Shared ownership and opportunities for other affordable low cost home ownership options are an essential part of this provision.

MyPlace has been awarded ‘HomeBuy Agent’ status by the government to help people in Dorset, Salisbury and South Somerset access low cost home ownership schemes within these areas. As HomeBuy Agents, it acts as a first point of call for information, advice and access to affordable home ownership.

Shared ownership housing is just one form of affordable housing and could be the answer to getting on the home ownership ladder by way of part buying and part renting a home.
