30.11.07 - MP gets on his bike to launch pedal power in Bridport
Oliver Letwin MP launches an innovative transport scheme in Bridport this week (Friday 30th November), with the help of around-the-world-adventurer Jason Lewis.
Ring & Ride Rickshaws is the latest project from Award-winning Community Group, Bridport TLC, a volunteer-led initiative to reduce CO2 and Landfill waste in and around the Dorset town.
Bridport TLC has teamed up with local businesses and MAGNA Housing Association to provide two bicycle rickshaws, one for collections and deliveries and one for passengers. The Cargo Rickshaw has been funded by local businessman Clive Groves of Groves Nurseries and will be used by the group to collect recyclable business waste including used vegetable oil, which the group turn into environmentally-friendly Biodiesel. It will also be available to collect and deliver goods and waste to and from Bridport households.
The Passenger Rickshaw has been funded by MAGNA Housing Association whose tenants will benefit from a low cost, carbon-free taxi service in and around town. “The service is primarily aimed at making life easier for many elderly, disabled and vehicle-less people” said Rosie Jones who is co-ordinating the scheme. “Trips to the shops, Health Centre, hospitals and friends sound simple but, to many people they can be expensive and a hassle. We hope that, as well as making an environmental impact, this project will increase the quality of life for many isolated people.”
Magna Housing Association’s Director, David Aldwinckle said “Our Community Initiative Fund which is managed by our tenants Area Panels, are delighted to have granted £4000 to this project. We are sure it will be a great asset to our residents, as well as contributing to lower our carbon footprint.”
Fittingly, the rickshaws will be pedalled out of Bridport TLC’s depot on St. Michaels Trading Estate by Jason Lewis, the adventurer who circumnavigated the world using only human power. As well as putting his pedalling skills of the past 13 years to good use, the group plan to recognise his achievements with a special award.
Project Manager and co-founder Leon Edwards said “We’re delighted that Jason has offered time in his busy schedule to support our work. His is a remarkable achievement and one completed without carbon emissions.”
“I don’t know what his future plans are but he is perfectly qualified for a job here with us!”
The launch will be attended by local Councillors and Officers, local business leaders and Bridport TLC staff and volunteers. “This project is an example of partnerships between the private, public and voluntary sectors that Bridport, and all those involved, can be proud of” said co-founder Tess Dickson. “We would like to thank MAGNA, Groves Nurseries, King Kabs, West Dorset District Council and all our volunteers.”
