Apprenticeships at Magna
Jamie Davidson and Lewis Donnelly, both apprentice plumbers, have just passed their level 2 plumbing apprenticeships at Yeovil college.
They both started at Magna in 2016 as apprentices and work in the central heating team. They are both currently helping out on different teams.
Jamie said: “All apprentices rotate around the teams, which gives us good experience and a taste of what working in other teams would be like. Working in the central heating and kitchen and bathroom teams provides varied and enjoyable work, for example, I’ve learnt other skills such as tiling and plastering, and there is a good atmosphere working as part of a team. Response work is more solitary and out on the road a lot more.”
Having received their level 2 certificates, Jamie and Lewis are already working towards their level 3 qualifications and are also hoping to gain gas safe certificates too.
Lewis said: “Magna is full of opportunities. I have a folder of certificates that I have gained since working here and a good portfolio. I’d advise anyone looking to leave school or change career path to look into an apprenticeship; you can’t go wrong.”
At the end of this, they will be qualified plumbers and heating engineers.
Apprenticeships are available on many different subjects and areas of work. We currently have 11 apprentices across office and trades roles and we are about to recruit for business admin and customer service apprenticeships.
In addition, there are also 5 employees who are completing apprenticeship qualifications as part of their career development within their existing role.
If anyone is interested in apprenticeships, Sarah Cartlidge, learning and development advisor, can provide information about what is available as an apprenticeship qualification for internal employees.
Sarah added: “If anyone knows someone interested in an apprentice role at Magna, we would suggest they set up an alert on the vacancies section of the Magna website so they hear as soon as any are available.”
