Magna in the community

Magna plays a very active role in the areas where we have homes.

We have a community involvement policy and we work with various groups.

We have a strong partnership with the Councils on a range of issues:  dealing with lettings and allocations, delivering the homelessness strategy, dealing with crime and disorder, fuel poverty and energy efficiency initiatives, fitting aids and adaptations for disabled residents and a range of community-wide initiatives, such as working on housing-related projects to mitigate the impact of the building of the new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point.

The directors regularly meet with their counterparts in the councils to ensure Magna continues to develop and preserve this important partnership.  We also meet regularly with the local town and parish councils and tell them about our plans for the future so they can let us have their views.

The housing director chairs the West Somerset Housing Forum, an umbrella group of organisations with an interest in housing.

We take part in the local area partnerships where we have properties.

We participate in community lunches which are attended by other local organisations and agencies which support local residents.  We also sponsor some of those lunches.

Increasingly, we work closely with the biggest landlords in Somerset and Dorset and on the Homefinder Somerset Choice Based Lettings Partnership, supported housing and housing benefits.

We also have a good working relationship with the voluntary sector, for example, the West Somerset Advice Bureau and Forum 21, who we work with on energy efficiency and advice issues.

We work closely with local credit unions and in particular First Dorset Credit Union.  Not only do these organisations help provide credit to our residents if they need, they are also able to give them good advice on anything to do with managing their money.

We have good links with local Citizens Advice Bureau offices and have given financial support to organisations such as local job clubs, food banks, children’s centres and HomeStart.

We work closely with other agencies, in particular Dorset Police, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, Avon and Somerset Constabulary and Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.  In working with the police, we are able to more easily solve cases of anti-social behaviour.  By working with the Fire Service we make sure we are doing all we can to put our residents’ safety first.

We contributed towards the formulation of the West Dorset District Council Housing Strategy 2013 to 2018 as well as the Dorset Homelessness Strategy and the Dorset Older Persons Housing Strategy.
