Old fashioned meters, called RTS (Radio Teleswitch) meters, are normally in homes with storage heaters, Economy 7-type, or ‘off-peak’ metering.

The radio signal that is used to switch between peak and off-peak rates on these meters is due to be permanently switched off on 30 June 2025. All RTS meters need to have been replaced with new meters that don’t use this signal. If the meter isn’t replaced, you could lose heating or hot water, or, find your heating on all the time.

To check if you have an RTS meter, look at your electricity meter and see if there is a separate box next to it. It may say ‘Radio Teleswitch’ or look something like this picture:

If you have an RTS meter, your electricity supplier should have contacted you to arrange for a new meter to be installed. If they haven’t been in touch, we advise that you contact them as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, we can’t do this for you as the meter doesn’t belong to us, it belongs to your electricity supplier, and you have the account with the supplier.

Further information, and contact details for most electricity suppliers can be found at the OFGEM website.
