Health and Safety policy

The purpose of this health and safety policy is to outline a framework that enables us to manage this important part of our operation in line with legislation, regulation and best practice.

We recognise and accept our responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work etc Act, 1974 and all other Acts of Parliament. We aim to have in place effective arrangements to assess, manage and control health and safety risks, with the aim of preventing injury and ill-health.

We define health as the impact on physical and mental wellbeing arising from the work we undertake. We define safety as the management and control of risks to protect physical and mental wellbeing from injury, harm, or danger.

Our overarching objective is to safeguard the health and safety of our customers, our colleagues and anyone who lives in, works at or uses our customers’ homes, Magna premises, maintenance sites, shared areas and construction sites.

We will do this by:

  • Complying with essential statutory requirements as an employer, landlord, contractor and provider of other services, and implementing best practice standards wherever possible.
  • Taking a proactive approach to identifying, assessing and acting to reduce risks.
  • Promoting an “always safe” culture where we encourage colleagues to report incidents and accidents, without fear of reprisal to ensure the root causes of accidents are identified and lessons are learned to continuously improve.
  • Integrating health and safety considerations into standard business practice and decision-making as far as possible.
  • Consulting with and providing information to colleagues, customers and other persons as appropriate on matters affecting their health and safety.
  • Ensuring that equipment, PPE, materials, workplaces and ways of working are suitable and safe.
  • Providing colleagues with the right instruction, training and supervision to ensure they are competent to do their work safely and that learning is embedded.
  • Ensuring the contractors we work with have their own sufficient health and safety policies and ways of working and are aware of Magna’s requirements of them.
  • Implementing a robust performance management reporting system covering health and safety matters which is overseen by the Leadership Team, Executive Board and Strategic Board.
  • Providing the resources necessary to implement this policy.

The Operational Safety Group lead in overseeing and enhancing safety standards, they meet quarterly and report to the Health and Safety Forum. The Health and Safety Forum, chaired by the Chief Executive, meets quarterly to review performance under clear Terms of Reference. Any issues of strategic significance are reported to the Executive Board for information, decision and/or action. The Executive Board receive detailed information about health and safety performance as part of the monthly performance report and ongoing performance management.

In line with their respective Terms of Reference, the Risk and Audit Committee provides oversight and scrutiny of health and safety assurance, including the effectiveness of risk management, internal controls and improvement activity, while Strategic Board retains responsibility for  approving the policy and maintaining overall governance accountability for health and safety.

Our principal property safety activities (gas, fire, electrical safety, water management, lifting equipment and asbestos management) have detailed standards in place reflecting legislation and best practice. These are reviewed annually and any changes to the standards are considered and approved by our Supply and Investment Committee, acting on behalf of the Board.

We have a programme of audits undertaken annually which focus on the most important health and safety areas. Results are reported to the Executive Board and the Risk and Audit Committee. Improvement plans arising from the audits are monitored closely.

This Policy is reviewed and approved every year by the Strategic Board, and as and when a significant and material change to the policy is required. This is then signed by the Chief Executive. The Strategic Board will also receive an annual report detailing the overall progress and performance of the health and safety activity across the business.

Selina White, Chief Executive September 2026.
